Suzi hatched a peeper tonight! - Update - another peeper hatched. :-)

New peeper! I did contradict myself and decide to make her a new nest. I feel the big mass of hay loose in that crate was not safe, too many holes and pockets and crannies for baby to slip out from under her, and end up in trouble like the last one. I made a better, more compact nest in a cardboard box with the front cut out of it, like we get from Costco. It's smaller so he/she can't get lost in there. Carefully moved them (and took this picture), and momma moved right in with them. Set the box back in the crate and covered it with a blanket on three sides so she has some privacy. NOW I'll leave her alone.

Side note... Since it's such a dark colored chick I'd say this one is probably not her egg. It's one of the mystery eggs. It may be our GL Wyandotte's? We'll see. With an Easter Egger Daddy, it could look like anything, right?

I've got the heat turned up in there, hopefully today she'll be able to bring them out and feed them. If she can do that, then maybe I will make it through this.

Right now she's just staring at her hot mash... At least when I'm looking.

I'm glad the second one hatched. I don't know why I was so skeptical that any of them would. ;-) But at least now little peepers will have a friend in this big world.

Yay!! That is wonderful! It looks like she is being very protective of her babies in that last pic. If you go out where she feels safer, I bet she'll eat, and probably encourage them to eat as well.

I did rig up a heat lamp overhead too so it would feel warm enough that she would let them out to eat a bit. It wasn't long til they started to peek out and be more active.

Hey kiddo! Not the comb! The food!

I picked up the peepers and put them on the food. That helped. :)

Hung around in there long enough to make sure they could get back up with momma when they want, and they can, so I left them alone. Now that it's warm and they know there's a big world out there though, they're wantin' to crawl all over the place. :)

Awww. They all look so happy. I love seeing broodies with babies.

Peekaboo!

I think some of you chicken people will appreciate this next pic! (my other friends haven't, so far)... I honestly have lost count of the days since the last time the hen got off the nest. I was a little concerned that even today, with all the chicks hatched, she seems to want to stay in the nest. She hadn't been up at all. Shouldn't she want to get up now? She's been able to eat, but not stretch her legs... or ... poop.

So I picked her up and just set her off the nest.

Wow.

I have kept and cleaned up after a lot of animals, I have smelled a lot of smells, and I don't think I have EVER smelled anything as foul as that thing.

I wonder if there's more.

As for broody poops, yeah, I don't think there is anything more foul except possibly exploded rotten eggs. It's a close contest, and they are both wretched.
