I have three chicks born about 3 and 4 days ago. I did have a infrared lamp and I have swapped to a brooder plate but my chicks won’t go under it. One is chirping really loudly and won’t go under the lamp. What do I do?

Place all the chicks together, then gently set the heat plate over them. Make sure it's not smashing them or forcing them to lie flat. Once they are under it they will feel more comfortable with it

Ok so I tried that but she wouldn’t stay under it: she left it and started chirping again, she’s cold to touch.

Put her in a warm towel in your hands/arms and see if she changes her disposition?...make sure she is warm. She may be chilled and will take a few to warm up to touch....chilled to the bones .....my mom use to say. LOL

Thanks I am warming her up now. The other two are under it but still chirping

Update: they are all under the brooder and the smaller one is chirping quietly every so often but she is touching the heat plate so she’s warm. Thanks for all your expertise. This is my first time with chicks

If you feel like you can't control their temperature enough, a heat lamp may be better. Then you can see them too. I have never had luck with older chicks using a heat plate, only tiny new ones

I have a thermometer directly under the heat lamp so I can control the temperature. They have the opportunity to stay under the warm spot or mosey away out of the heat.

I had a heat lamp and it was getting very hot so swapped out to the plates. They are happy out not underneath it. Not a peep out of them now :)
