sweet cherries--what to do with excess

My chickens LOVE them (I take the pits out and break into bite size pieces). Began giving them when I learned they might help with gout which my roo may have and that's when I also learned how much they LOVE

them.

They freeze well whole, in a single layer on a cookie sheet, then once frozen (which happens pretty fast) gather into whatever containers you want to store them frozen in.

Thawed, they are still fine for pie. Or you can boil them up with some sugar to make a dessert sauce, e.g. for icecream. Either just make as much as you need, or make a lot and freeze the extra, or you can waterbath can the extra (10 min for half-pints or pints) assuming you have a reasonable amount of sugar in there.

Have fun!

Thanks! i was wondering about freezing them with the stones in them, an dlooked it up online--it said it gave the cherries a nutty taste--which wouldn't be all that bad, but, ... I seeded them anyways. Next time I will try freezing them whole. The cookie sheet trick I have used with soo many other things. i love doing things that way. rhubarb, strawberries, asparagus, peppers diced, etc etc. I see cherry cheesecake in the near future!

I pitted all my cherries & put up 4 pints tonight!

Silly chicks were going NUTS for the pits & little pieces I gave them. They kept jumping up on the table to help themselves from my pitted bowl. Nuh-uh you don't!!!

I tried to straw trick a while back & it didn't work for me. The chopsticks work fine for me, though I did get cherry juice all over myself.
