Sweet PDZ or Pine Shavings?

Sweet PDZ is NOT a bedding. Sweet PDZ is a naturally accruing and totally safe mineral that removes ammonia. You add it to your bedding, you don't use it in place of. To quote the directions on the bag.... Sweet PDZ is highly compatible with every form of bedding available today. It will help to extend the life of bedding material and improve its performance.

Next month will be a year since my coop got built and functioning. I have the same sand in it. I've touched up twice with more PDZ. In July I plan to shovel out old dirt and put in new with sweet PDZ. The last heavy rain water seeped in and I detect odor from the wet area. It's amazing I went a whole year no odors. I use it in the poop board as well. I've freshend with PDZ more often because scooping eventually takes the sand level down. I think I've mentioned I live directly behind our city hall/pd so order would be not good.

That's exactly what I do! Once a year I swap out the sand and PDZ for fresh and touch up in between with PDZ. I maybe use 50LBs a year plus 150LB of sand for about $20 a year total for bedding. I do the same thing in the duck house, works great!

What kind of sand do you use?

I use the PDZ on the poop board filled with sand. Occasionally, if I have extra left over after adding some to the poop board, I'll sprinkle a little on the pine shavings. I've found that more organic matter in the coop (hay, pine straw, etc) mixed with the pine shavings has helped with keeping the coop "fresh" for longer.

Is play sand safe to use?

PDZ on the poop boards and pine shavings on the floor. Although I can’t find PDZ anymore so I’m switching to sand.
