Our rooster, Fred, has some swelling above his left eye and he is all out of sorts. We left town Friday to a bird that was crowing at all hours of daylight and quite active to come home to a bird who is completely different.

The growth about his eye is quite large and I believe it to be impairing his vision. He is quite lethargic and I am betting has had little water or food. His mate appears fine; feisty and active as ever. I do have them separated for right now.

A couple of posts have mentioned Coryza or worms, among many other conditions. I have attached a photo for the crowd to weigh in on. My son is pretty devastated about Fred’s condition as he is part of this year’s intended 4-H project.

The swelling is unusual for a respiratory disease. I wonder if he has been pecked or has a cyst? Can you get more pictures? Is the swelling blocking his sight? Does he have any bubbles or foam in his eye?

I can’t tell if the swelling is blocking his eyesight or not but I’m presuming that it is due to how inactive he is. We have him isolated right now with his own food and water. If I can get some better pictures tonight, I will if not it will have to wait till tomorrow. I also don’t see any bubbles or foaming around his eye.

A little update: per our 4-H advisor we did lance the swollen growth on Fred’s face. A clear liquid came out and there was immediate relief to his face and he opened the eye a lot more. We put antibiotics on the wound and he is resting indoors for the night.

I know we did not have the post up long but I want to say thank you to the community. We just joined this evening and are already being welcomed.

Glad that you got the cyst or whatever drained. Could you post a new picture and let us know how he is getting along. His swollen eye seems different than a lot of posts we see.
