I switched to pellets recently because I use a sand run and alot of the crumble gets kicked around and buried in the sand run. 2 days now and it doesnt seem like the hens are eating much if any at all. Any tips?
It took me a long time to switch to pellets. You will need to mix whatever you were feeding with the pellets. They should eat eventually otherwise if you choose not to mix, but expect a drop in production from the decreased consumption of feed.
No expert, but I switched mine because the first food they were on had bits of corn/etc in it they were picking out and leaving the rest.
New food was a pellet, so I crushed them in a coffee grinder at first and cut it 50/50 with the old food for a few days, then eventually switched to only the new pellets but still mostly crushed with the grinder (I tried not to pulverize it so there were still some larger chunks). Now its just the pellets and they seem to have accepted it just fine, just took time.
If you give Scratch Grains as a treat try mixing in pellets and toss on dry ground. My first Flock devoured the Pellets off the ground.
I also mixed Pellets with Crumbles for a week in the feeder.
If you don't have any crumbles left, you can turn pellets into crumbles in a blender one cup at a time using pulse.
Or a larger amount in a food processor. I had to grind Chick Starter that was too big for day old Chicks. GC
