Hi,

My indian runner has been dealing with what looks like a joint infection. I have taken her to the vet, where she has been given antibiotics and they cut open and removed any infection around the area.

There was never any sign or puncture or bumblefoot, just swollen ankle.

She has been on 2 rounds of antibiotics, is starting her third and they have removed infected material from the area two times.

Her ankle is still very swollen and I am not sure what to do anymore but keep repeating what I am doing.

Are the chances of her recovering from this bad? Any advice?

My duck had this but she's a Pekin. I'm surprised a little Runner would get this but joints are joints. Like Mag asked above, what antibiotic is the duck taking? How long has it been since they removed pus? My sweetheart had to be opened up multiple times unfortunately.

I should have added that my Pekin did recover. I admit that it was a long battle until she recovered and it took some aggressive treatment. Sounds like you have a vet that knows what they're doing (certainly not saying that I know more than any vet). How often are you changing the bandages, soaking her, and what are you using topically on her incision site?

She is on SMZ pills. The first Pus removal was 4 weeks ago, and the second happened this Wednesday. It is very swollen, more so than before the removal (looks worse). I change the bandage every day and soak everyday.

I also put Neosporin on the incision site.

In my experience that's the best for infection. Its Bactrim. My vet gives me oral solution which ends up everywhere. If you can get pills down a duck, that seems best. just be faithful with it.

Oh yes, I have become a pro at giving them pills! Will just have to be patient.

I am happy to hear that you've had cases where it's healed.
