I have a chick in the incubator that hatched about 12 hours ago. From the time it hatched it has had a severely swollen belly. And it seems to be getting hard.
It is so swollen that the chick cannot sit upright but flips over onto its back.

what is this all about and is there anything I can do for it?

It could be Mushy chick, which is a bacterial infection they can get while absorbing their yolks or in their navel.

There isn't a whole lot you can do for it, and even if they recover it leaves their immune system very weakened. I have no personal experience treating it, so I don't really have any advice.

He could also just be swollen from absorbing the yolk and it will just simply go down over the next few days. I'll tag @Eggcessive and see if they can help you out here. Best of luck to you and the little one.

If the chick has mushy chick or omphalitis, it may die within days. Usually those chicks have an infection from the navel, and are weak and unable to thrive. You could try feeding and watering it, but it doesn’t sound like it will survive. So sorry.
