My hens eye is all of a sudden swollen. Not fully shut yet.
I read other places it’s a type of infection and to gently clean it. What do you guys think?
We’re Quarantining her.

Sorry about your hen. Do you see any bubbles or discharge from here eyes? How about any discharge from her nose, ears or mouth? Sometimes respiratory infections can cause eye swelling.

If there are no signs of respiratory infection, she may have something in her eye or may have been pecked. Gently open the eye and look inside for anything foreign. Go ahead and rinse it with saline while you are in there. You will need to then apply a Terramycin ointment to the eye a few times a day for about a week. You can get some at farm supply stores, but you may have to ask for it.

She has a lot of puss looking milky white eye discharge I wiped it out and tried to squirt saline in the eye after. But her eye was closed so I don’t know what got it. No other discharge. I will try to look in the eye for objects.

You will need to gently pry the eye open with thumb and forefinger twice a day to irrigate with saline, and to apply a dot of antibiotic ointment into the eye. If you press down on the lower lid, it will open it for the ointment. Maybe try also squeezing around the eye to see if any pus comes out from around the eye. See video below. She may have a sinus infection such as mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG.) If you can try to get Tylosin or Denagard from your vet it can help treat it. Have you added any new birds recently?
