Swollen Face, No Apparent Injury or Pus (Has Pics)

For closure's sake, we culled her fairly soon after this and did a necropsy. It was a tumor. Not infectious, haven't seen anything else like this in the flock since.

Not every facial swelling is a reportable disease.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Your correct not every
swelling is a reportable disease! You did the right
thing by doing the necrospy and getting to the bottom of the illness. Again I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry it came to culling and you're absolutely correct about the reportable stuff. That never even crossed my mind. My thoughts were only on getting your bird safe and cured to the best of my ability with my advice. I am sorry it was no help to you.

Meh, life is a learning curve. Chickens are a prey species, with scattershot reproductive strategy - animals that fit that description tend to die frequently.

We've got over 50 chicks on the ground growing out, most of whom look to be better than their moms, so that's a great consolation. I dont mind so much culling birds - we take a pretty hard line approach to medicating the flock - but it's always frustrating when we can't process them for eating, like this one. I hate wasting food.
