Swollen foot and bent (broken?) claw

Our rooster's right foot is swollen especially his middle toe. Today the claw is bend sideways.

What could this be? Is this something we could treat ourselves or should we call a vet? If we need to take a better look at him ourself, how can we do this safely without injuring him or getting spurred or injured ourselves?

I would say definitely take a closer look at it. Get an old towel and try to wrap him up snug but still make sure you don’t squeeze too tight. I find it easiest to have a helper hold a bird and I take a closer look at him. Try to look for any cuts or irritated spots such as bumblefoot, and try to get some closer pictures of that toe.

If he is difficult to catch, catch him after he has roosted for the night.
