I found my RIR with a swollen foot and a sore on end of her toe. She looked bad and would not stand on the sore foot. I thought she was on her deathbed. I cleaned the sore and moved her into a box in the garage. She seems to get stronger everyday. I have been soaking her foot daily and applying Neosporin. My wife says she is getting her spa treatment everyday and may never want to move back to the hen house. The sore seems to be getting better but the swelling will not go down. The only antibiotic i had was some Duramycin so I started giving her some in her water.

I cleaned and dug around in the sore several times but found no plug or puss. I am at a lose to what do next.

Any thoughts ?

It's probably sort of like bumblefoot. I would guess she needs to be on oral antibiotic as well as the neosporin.
Fioot wounds on chickens take a long long time to heal. Can you take her to a vet?

I had a rooster with a foot wound and the vet told me that the infection can get into the joint. That's what it looks like might have happened to yours. You could try contacting the chicken doctor at www.firststatevetsupply.com. You can get advice from there and also some stronger antibiotics.

No free advice from the chicken doctor anymore. I would buy antibiotics if I knew what to buy and where.

WEll you can still buy antibiotics from him. Try Cephalexin 1cap 2/x a day for ten days or so. It is for wounds and related infections and you can get it on his site.. But really, at this point, you might need a vet.

And yeah, injectable penicililn might work too, I have not ever tried that, but I know that when the vet used injectable antibiotics for our rooster's foot wound, he injected it somewhere as close to the area as he could get. I don't remember where, and I also don't remember what antibiotic he injected.

I gave her a 4 day treatment of Penicillin and she seems to feel better but the swelling has still not gone down. She is trying to walk around more but the swelling is still the same.

Should I give her another 4 day round of shots.?
Should I give it to her in the swollen foot or still in her leg or breast ?
