Lake Wales, Florida (Central Florida)
Two weeks ago we had a hen with eyeworm that we wormed and had to debride the eyeball. She recovered.

A week ago this hen woke with a massively swollen head. Her eyelids had no running puss but there was yellow under them that was like soft globs under the tissue of her eyelids. That seems to have drained to her cheeks. Note the yellow skin. Her head seems less swollen barely. The first day, she seemed miserable. After that day she never seemed sick.

This is not like hard cheesy pus. It is soft and all mixed throughout her whole face under the skin, though it seems much less than before on her eyelids.

We had meat birds we processed two weeks ago. We also live on a lake w water fowl, and turkeys are everywhere in my neighborhood. I rarely see them in my fenced yard though anymore because of my dog. I live in central Florida.

I’ve kept her segregated completely since day one. I wormed her because the other hen had eyeworms. I’ve given .7ml of Baytril 2.5 twice a day for a week now 2x per day. She weighs 3.4 lbs. I’ve also used erythromycin eye ointment 2x per day. I’ve used vet rx under her wings off and on. She is an EE.

She has a great appetite and doesn’t seem sick other than her swollen head. I’ve kept her completely segregated in my bathroom with daily walks outside and far from my yard- changing my clothes to keep this from the flock in case it is contagious.

Any thoughts on what this could be? It doesn’t seem to be going away after a week. She has never laid an egg and 10 months old so I can’t use that metric to see if she is improving.

I am not really an expert on eyes, but it looks more like she could have a sinus infection, or possibly has been stung by something. Especially since others have had some symptoms. Eye worm is rare, ut a vet could diagnose it by looking at worm eggs in the poops. Eye worm is treated with 5 days of SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer given orally for 5 consecutive days.

There is a condition called swollen head syndrome which is a pneumovirus, but it rare in the US, and more common in turkeys. You can read about SHS here:

Baytril is a good antibiotic that treats a lot of different bacteria, but as you know is banned for chickens. Some vets will use it for hard to treat infections. If she has a virus, that would not respond to antibiotics, but would have to run it’s course. Asking a vet to test her and send it off to your state vet, or contacting Zoologix to send you swabs to collect would be th best bet. If you should lose her, I would get a necropsy through your state poultry lab.
