Went out to tuck in birds and noticed my Roo has a swollen "jaw". The area just below and in front of where the beak hinges on the right side is very swollen. I didn't get a pic and the birds are gone to bed so I will have to get one tomorrow. He was out free ranging and pecking with the girls earlier and I didn't notice any unusual behavior. My son said he had noticed it a day ago but it is worse now than when he noticed.
Please note that the beak offset is not due to the swelling. He has been crossbeaked since he was a chick.
Ideas? Treatment? Anyone?

Thanks.

I would do a cool compress on it unless it's a sore, then put some ointment on it.  Who knows what it is.  Could be a snake or bee bite.

What kind of ointment? Like an antibiotic cream? How long and how often on the compress? He is fairly tollerant to being held.

What is mynext step if that doesn't work? He is kind of a pet so I am willing to work with him some.

Thanks for the advice.

Please try to post a picture. It could be MG, coryza, canker,a tumor, cyst, or abscess, but pictures really help. If there are other symptoms such as watery eyes, nasal drainage, foam or bubble in eyes, or a foul smell to the head, that would point more to a respiratory disease.

I will post one tomorrow, late. They were going to roost when I noticed it. I don't believe it is respratory, no drainage ad it is under the lower beak ad only on one side. If he were a chipmonk I would think his cheek pouck was impacted but Roos don't "pocket" feed (that I know of :) ).

I am thinkingby the speed in which it has increased in size that it may be infected in some way.

Thanks for the response. Keep me tagged and I will try to put a pici up tomorrow.

There looks to be something inside of his beak in picture number 2, which if not food, may be a sign of canker. Treatment if you think you are dealing with canker is Fish  Zole  (metronidazole or Flagyl) 250 mg daily by mouth for 5 days.   Here is a link to read and a link with canker pictures in post 1 and 3:

Thanks for links. I will take a look inside his mouth this evening.
