I have an Australorpe hen 7 months old. When I was locking them up for the evening last night, i noticed that she has swollen, kinda bulbus toes and appears that her nails have fallen out. She seems to be walking alright, and I noticed that she is eating and drinking this morning. I'm waiting for the sun to get up here so I can go out and get a good look at her toes. Any idea's as to what this could be and what I need to do about it? thanks in advance for any advice.

without a photo it is difficult.
It would be helpful if you could post a pic.
Have you checked for edema anywhere else on her body (specifically the lower abdoman)?
There is a sticky at the top of this forum and if you could answer those questions it would also be helpful .

I feel like a total idiot, like I said I noticed the "problem" last night at dusk very low light. then this morning at around 6:30 I let them out, very low light again. When it was brighter out I checked and what had happened to her and a couple others but not as bad was this, they had poop and mud caked, hardened, and balled up over there toe nails. this made it appear that the nails had fallen out and the ends of the toes had swollen. After much soaking in warm water, and protest from the hens I was able to soften the nasty mess and get it off. So my hens got a chicken pedicure this afternoon. Thanks for the advice.

A chicken pedicure! How great---I'm trying to picture this and hope the hens enjoy it as much as I think they should. Soon they'll be wanting a facial and a massage as well, and they probably won't even give you a tip!

You're a great chicken mama to do this for them!
