I checked internally and did not feel any egg obstruction. Bulging at her vent...warm bath, massaging and some calcium. Nothng .She was waddling. Passing a little yellowish,white stuff. Any clues?

It's possible she's got Egg Yolk Peritonitis/internal laying...

Is she showing any symptoms of lethargy, losing appetite, going off water, or hunching/puffing up?

Ascites is commonly associated with a swollen abdomen.

Where is the bulge? Is it to the left of the vent?

Also, how old is she?

Vaneeta is four years old. Bard rock and somethng else. Only saw her yesterday (Sat) eve as she was waddling in to roost. Today she was out with the others and went off to eat. She is our friendly one, so she came up to us and then I saw she was still waddling. I cannot say if she is eatiing or drinking, but have to believe she is, or she would not be so mobile. She is not lethargic. I have her in a separate cage now, and will check to see just where the bulging is. Feeling earlier tho, I think it was generally full up to her tummy. Will check. Thank you.

I saw her drinking water before I took her out of her cage.

It almost seemed the swelling was down, but not much. There is no bulge to the left or the right of the vent. She had not pooped in the cage. When I put her down she took off. Waddled yes, but didn't think as bad as before. I was sidetraked by a scuffle with some other hens, and when I turned around, she was gone. We are on a working cattle ranch. The hens have a free range of a lot of fields and a pond. I will post later to see when the girls come to roost to see what she is like. Thanks again for your concern.I need to look to see where Magnolia is. Kathy

Mrs. Brooke, the update is that Vanetta went around the yard and then went up to roost with everyone else. I think she is walking better, but I will follow through with another sitz bath tomorrow. I will keep my fingers crossed for an expulsion in the morning. I will let you know. Again, I appreciate your support.

Definitely feel her abdomen and see if she feels like she's full of water... super squishy. Also, check for any masses or hard lumps that shouldn't be there.

I'm glad she's drinking on her own.

Do you think you could post a photo of the swelling?

Mrs. B, Vaneeta hung around with her group all day. Her walking doesn't seem to be as bad, but waddlng is waddling. I took a pic, but will have to get my daughter to send it tomorrow. Not good with the technical aspect of the computer...lol Walking with Vaneeta to the roost tonight, she was active, eating bugs, preening and doing chicken things. Another day, yea !

I put her up on the roost last night and took her down this am, but really,I think she would have done it herself. She didn't like the rung she was on and went up another one herself. I just was anxious this am to see how she was. Really, I think she not waddling side to side like she was on Sun, but more just more uncomfortable walking. I stayed with her as she went down the barn and out to the yard. She was making noise and stopping to scratch and peck at the ground. I examined her last night, so II didn't want to do it so soon. Will send pic soon. Thanks, Kathy She did drink water and eat a grain or two.
