One of my Maren hens has a swelling on her vent. When I noticed this Sunday evening there was a blackish discharge, but that was gone in the morning. I isolated her, just in case it was some kind of disease. In her water I put apple cider vinegar and some cayenne. Lat night the swelling was down, but when i pressed on it, it released a clear discharge. She is perky, eating and drinking fine, and she is still laying. Does anyone know what's going on with her?

Sometimes a picture helps if you can find someone to take it while you hold her. She might have had an egg stuck that broke or a prolapse that went back in. Inserting a gloved finger (that is lubricated) into the vent you can gently examine for any material left inside such as an egg shell.

I'm thinking that it might be an impacted egg in a bad spot. But it's confusing, because she is very perky, running around, eating, doing everything a normal chicken should.
