Swollen weepy eyed Welsummer hen

Goldie is really not doing well... leaving for the vet in about fifteen minutes and *fingers crossed* but outlook isn't good. Have already enlisted help of a friend who has no birds of his own that could become at risk - but who knows how to humanely and quickly cull if it comes to it. Cried when I called him - hard - I really hope it does not come to that.

And with that said, there are a couple of things I really don't tolerate well. These include people who treat animals/kids/elderly badly, people who try to lie/cheat/screw others over assuming their target is too dumb to know the difference, and anyone who insults others when they've gone on a limb to give the benefit of the doubt and take the high road in sharing helpful information at a time they could have done otherwise.

She screwed up on all of these. And, suffice to say, I found some extremely useful information that, combined with her written email statements, will probably result in her not having chickens for a while. Major violations left and right - I almost emailed her with them but am instead am opting to go higher up the chain. She had her chance - and people with such loose ethics are a disservice and threat to a healthy agricultural industry and honest well-intentioned people everywhere. Even if the hen doesn't end up being MG positive - this lady is violating some big-biggies - and I'm going to be sure she learns not to do this to anyone (or any animals) again.

So much more I could say - but I'm going to refrain from sharing anything more by which she could possibly identified - and will hold on sharing the links for what she's violated until after the reporting process in underway. Given unfortunate and depressing circumstance - I feel like I hit the goldmine with what I learned today - and that makes what may be coming a little easier to face.

Awww, well I'm praying for the best for both you and Goldie! I hope she makes it, I love welsummers, but if she doesn't at least her death won't be in vain.

Update to this:

Given Goldie's condition and odds and the high risk of infecting our other hens (keeping strict quarantine with four people sharing a house... not knowing exactly what all she may or may not carry... and with cultures taking time to get results on without 100% success) - we ended up euthanizing Goldie. Very sad but at least she experienced a few days of tasty treats and kind treatment before the end. The vet did a necropsy and saved samples to send to the state lab. Avian TB was confirmed... among other things. Now in the process of following up from a few angles to be sure the woman doesn't do this again. And as for 'clean up' in our coop/yard/house to be sure our other hens are not at risk? Dug six inches of soil up from the part of the yard where she had access and we're completely disposing of the coop she was quarantined to. Also in the process of cleaning up the basement (where we further quarantined her)... really 'fun' given that even bleach doesn't do anything against mycobacterium. I think I may need to sell my other eggs for at least $30 a piece to begin making up for what this $12 hen cost us within just a few days. Argh.

But they are more than layers for us - they are also 'pets'. And if we can turn our loss into action that will prevent this woman from knowingly infecting other flocks (particularly with people who might not quarantine) - it will be 'worth it'... I guess.

I've thought of you and Goldie so often, thanks for updating- I'm sorry it wasn't a happier ending. What a nightmare to clean up from too. I know you probably don't want to throw more money at the problem, but I know oxine is effective against mycobacterium. Best of luck to you and the rest of your flock!

p.s. I don't even know what to say about the seller. I really don't. I'd hope that getting reports of the positive test would be enough to sway her, but she sounds pretty heartless from your account. Ugh.

Just take pride in all the revenge you can have and all the good feeling you can get knowing that woman will be facing some serious charges if you follow up on this with all the proper agencies. Dont forget about all the chickens you can save in all the flocks in your area either.
Best of luck and there are many here who support you!
