“Ow” she cried her hands flying to her head, she sat up almost immediately “I promise, I swear on my own life we are lost” she said echoing Evan, she looked sideways at Evan to look at what he was doing to not provoke the kid. She watched the child for any sudden moments for her to try and dodge, this kid was over the top, like seriously in need of some anger management. Lyra could probably recommend help for her, she sniggered to herself despite the fact the kid would probably attack her.
The girl didn’t speak a word after they explained their difficult predicament. Evan hated every second that went by without a response from the small girl, the silence was absolutely crushing him as he waited impatiently for her to believe or discredit them.

Her staff lowered from their faces, her tone of voice softening “So you two from the Safe Zone?”

“..Wha-What?” whispered Evan, confused by her question. “Safe Zone?”

Her patience wavered “The number on your hand idiot. You both have them right?”

Evan hesitated, thinking whether to play along or remain completely oblivious. He shared a look with Lyra, trying to seek some kind of agreement or disagreement through her eyes. Maybe if this violent child won’t explain what’s going on.. then perhaps we can find answers in this ‘Safe Zone’ place..

Lyra looked up and traded looks with Evan, “yeah we both have a number” she said holding hers hand out “please just tell us where we are, what’s this safe zone?” Her patience was starting to waver and it was clear in her voice she wasn’t impressed

Lieu lowered herself to the floor so she was somewhat eye level with them. She rested her staff in her lap, but kept both of her hands securely wrapped around it, not completely letting her guard down. They’re so strange.

“So what do you have to offer?” she asked slyly, eyeing the bags they had in their possession.

Evan was taken aback by her request. “Offer?” he repeated, raising a brow and looking down at his bag. Was she asking they give her their stuff in exchange for information?

“Yeah. This isn’t a charity, so pay up if you want me to answer your stupid questions.”

Evan didn’t argue or put up a fuss, so he just simply pulled off his bag and unzipped it, emptying its contents one by one. He laid out everything neatly in front of the child’s feet, “This is all I’ve got, really.”

“I’ll give you my money” she offered holding out the four silver coins “this is all I got”. She glanced at Evan who was laying out the contents of his bag, why would the kid want any of his stuff?

”where?” She tilted her head “what’s Barbados?” She peered at the tree’s it had somehow connected with, they were just sitting there, I mean obviously what did she expect? The entire forest to grow legs like Sphagnum and start walking around singing and dancing the conga line? No but she expected something to happed like the trees to start glowing and shifting in an invisible wind or Sphagnum to be absorbed by the tree.
"Just as I thought."

Sphagnum was all too content to the remain where it was as they exchanged words, allowing its to biotic extremities to settle in. Leaning all the way back against the oak's trunk even allowed its neck roots to find hold and subsequently provided the relief of environmental oneness that its peripatetic tendencies rarely allow for.

But there was something off about the soil, an indeterminate wrongness loitering at the far reaches of Sphagnum's exploratory perception, but understanding the slight abnormally wasn't a priority.

"Barbardos is an island country- perhaps you know of the Caribbean? I've been residing there for for the past three seasons or so. Just about time to move on."
Sphagnum looked down at the blaring 1 plainly displayed on its overturned palm. "Though I can't say this stop was anywhere to be found on my vast itinerary."

“Why do you use such formal words?” Cassie demanded “it’s annoying me.” To be fair he wasn’t really, she just wanted to blame him for something, and to be honest she really didn’t want him to leave because if he did she would have absolutely no contact with anyone from the human world. “Sorry I’m just tired” she mumbled avoiding his eyes and crossing her arms tightly across her chest.

“I’ll give you my money” she offered holding out the four silver coins “this is all I got”. She glanced at Evan who was laying out the contents of his bag, why would the kid want any of his stuff?
Unintrigued by the contents Evan managed to set out, Lieu switched her attention to Lyra, who didn’t hesitate to surrender her coins. The young girls eyes glistened with greed, snatching the four precious coins from her hand and jumped up. “This should be enough! Thanks!” she declared, shooting right out of the hut. “Come on house invaders!”

Evan scrambled to put his bag back together and catch up to Lieu before the she just up and disappeared from sight. He was completely bewildered by her sudden estatic energy that replaced her previous callous temperament. Did she eat all kinds of Pixy Stix’s beforehand? This kid is really unpredictable.. actually all kids are.. but.. Luckily, in the back of his mind he was grateful she didn’t catch the coins he was about to set out before snatching up Lyra’s. Evan chased after the staff-wielding child, “Wait! Hold up! You’re supposed to answer our questions!” he called out, refusing to take his eyes off her as she began navigating through the forest. “Where are we?”

Lieu cut through some dense bushes and ducked underneath low hanging branches before following a set dirt path. “A forest, duh.” she called back bluntly.

Evan gave a heavy sigh at her sarcastic response, “No! What country or continent are we in? Are we in the states? In Europe? Asia? Where?”

“Gee, you sure have a lot of questions, but I guess anywhere outside the Safe Zone is considered the Distant Lands— well, that’s what I call it at least.” she explained, stopping to face him and Lyra, “You’ve got some funky names for places though.”

She glanced at Evan silently grateful he hadn’t given the child his coins, she heard him ask the questions. The kid responded.
Distant lands? Distant lands?! She rolled her lips together her face scrunched up in annoyance “where. The. Heck. Are the distant lands?” She snapped folding her arms, she was close to exploding on this kid and taking her money back but, maybe, just maybe the child would tell them something they could make sense of. Lyra tried to keep her cool, she couldn’t be too mean to this kid or she might risk the kid leaving them in the middle of this forest.

"Why should I waste breathe on flavorless utterances when there's so much grandeur squirreled away in the human language?" The comic irony in that was his entire lack of a respiratory system. Or any bodily organ, to be honest.

Sphagnum was pleasantly surprised he'd already managed to get her riled, but he was also tuned into the exhausted undertones that spoke of her extremely low tolerance level. If he did continue on in pursuit of her goat, she might just be liable to leave.
And that would be simply unacceptable. Sphagnum didn't just lose children.

Sphagnum began disengaging from the tree in his characteristic inchmeal manner that was somehow both hurried and lingering. "What, do you suppose, should be our next course of action? Any particular desires or discomforts? You speak of this tiredness."

“Hey” Lieu pointed a finger at Lyra, “Calm it lady before you break a hip.” She advised sternly before acknowledging Evan who’s face had gone completely white. “What’s your deal? See a ghost or something?” She jeered, waving the monkey keychain on her staff at him to get his attention.

Evan stood completely stiff, None of this is making sense.. in fact.. everything just got far more confusing. Are we really even on Earth anymore if she’s never heard of these places? Looking over Lieu’s appearance silently, he assumed she never learned such things if she was living out here by herself. Would this be considered the Distant Lands? Where we are now? And the Safe Zone.. is..?

Lieu started to poke Evan with her staff until she received an answer from him, curious if he’d turned to stone or something.

“Where.. are you taking us?” he finally uttered.

She stopped with the poking and started following the set path once again, “Somewhere that takes you to the Safe Zone. You two can’t really last out here much longer than you already have. Especially without weapons.”
