You better not tell them about your sons money either - theyll want to tax that. I mean swallow a quarter and only a nickle comes out? Kids holding out somewhere.

First I want to applaud the group for its level headedness in this thread. Nice job.

In the same breath, I want to comment that Americans are a funny lot, really.

We cry and whine and complain about the bad old capitalists. Unequal distribution of wealth is evil. The big guys are always nailing us little guys. Somebody give me mine. Boo hoo.

So we shout for change as loudly as we can. We embrace the notion of 'kindness' and looking out for the downtrodden. We hope in the government to take care of things for us and ease our burdens. "Take down the big guys," becomes our cry. We fall in love with anyone who offers these things to us. Gary may be the only one here who remembers a decent baseball pitcher named Fidel Castor. He promised all the same things to the people of Cuba. We've seen how that has turned out.

Eventually we realize that nothing is free and this stuff is gonna cost us dearly. Then we freak out.
The best thing we have going for us is our divisions. If we were truly unified under the banner of a single controlling government, we might not be having this particular conversation at all...

The voter of today fails to see the Great America that was; they arent taught it properly, they don't live it and they aren't expected to be a participant in it. They dont know the level of involvement on the average citizen required to hold a nation like this together. They only see what is before them, now, and think that is it, giving little thought as to how it got there.

Here's a news flash: there 'aint nothing new about Obama or his administration. He's cut from a common mold - the tax and spend political saviour/zealot. A few others that come to mind are Roosevelt, Johnson, Carter....

Such as he believes government should control all situations and be all things to all people. Thats from his own lips, by the way. He has sycophants in the media to beat that drum, and as long as it appears he is giving away something for free, enough folks buy in.

Sooner or later, though, you run out of other peoples' money, or they get tired of watching you abuse it.

Others before him have tried the same, with limited success... always with limited success.
It always strikes me as interesting that we think it will work THIS TIME, just because we have new leaders.

Research Assignment: Look up the Glass-Seagal Act of 1933.
Report back on it's cause, it's effects and it's recent repeal.

There will be a test.

Respectfuly you sound like you are FOX news. HLS didn't say those things. They said that the current economic situation is ripe for right wing extremism. They also said a year ago before we got rid of Bush that the situation was ripe for left wing extremism. I have an opinion and I am not an extremist. Their assessment seemed to be pretty spot on. I'm hearing a lot of extremist stuff on this line. There are a lot of opinions that would not have been made a year ago. So if your not an extremist don't worry about it. If your planningon shooting up a gay bar or killing some colored folk then watch out. They are looking for you.

I'm sure they'll let you off. Call them right away and explain what happened. Then teach your son to save his money not eat it.

David, you're right. The pertinent parts should be emailed to everyone who is susposedly representing our interests in local, state, and federal governments. I am heartened by the fairness of the posts. It seems everyone is trying to get a fair grasp of what is going on, no matter where they are in the political spectrum. I wish I were more able to be eloquent, and had more fingers to type with. There were enough people at the gatherings that no "smart" politician should dismiss them out of hand.

Ouch. Now that hurt, and that is not at all what I saw - and I also watched alot of footage. I saw people there who voted FOR Obama, and I for one don't care if it's Obama, Bush, or my grandma in the White House (and Congress), I just want some honesty and accountability and it's been a long time since we have had either.

See you watched FOX. She watched mainstream. Goes to prove you can't trust any of them. But I really don't trust foxes at all. Lost too many chickens to them. I'm sure those people that said they voted for Obama were FOX plants to try to give some credibility to the lie that the tea bag parties were bi-partisan.

Well I think for the most part we have honesty and accountability. Some people just don't like what they are hearing. So far Obama has been truthful. Every thing he is doing is posted on his website.

ben&momschicks :

There was a big one in Knoxville, TN. The paper said 1700 showed up, but the TV news said 2000-3000.

We need to ramp it up though. We need to have more and have them when more people can come. I don't think the people who watched the network news got a full view of how big a lot of these protests were.

Karen

That's exactly right.

See, the problem with these protests is that there are very few that get the attention of the Big Dogs in the media. Only a handful come out, either because we're not putting in enough effort to get the word out, or work schedules don't allow people to attend.
If we want to get the attention of the government (and fellow like-minded Americans), these need to be bigger movements, more often. If we bug the government enough, they'll eventually sit up and take notice.
Isn't the general role of our government (or the original intent, anyway) to work for WE THE PEOPLE?
If WE THE PEOPLE sit back and have our big, annual protest, it's not going to have as much of an impact as we would like for it to.
I'm not saying we're going to have 75% of America at the doorstep of the White House (but wouldn't that be awesome?!), but we can definitely get these movements growing and more frequent.

They go off in a civilized manner with the annual thousand-sum crowd that shows up, why not more often?

No I absolutely don't agree with the bailout or the way the money was given out no strings attached. When Bush and Paulsen first came up with the scheme Paulsen specifically wanted 700 billion with no strings attached and immunity from any investigation of how the money was spent. The dems said no way there will be a lot of strings attached and the public will be repaid. 3 days later they pass a bill just like Paulsen asked for.

I'm not sure about the stimulus plan. I am not an economics major and even if I was it wouldn't make a difference. There are a lot of economist that say the stimulus will work There are a lot that say it won't. Seems to be divided down party lines like everything else in this country. Somebody said something about 4 trillion. 800b from Bush which is actually 1.7t and the rest from Obama. Obama is trying to clean up a pile of doo doo that could fill Lake Superior. He needs a big shovel. A lot of that money is slated to get a national heath care plan going. He has also promised to have the budget balanced in 4 years. Yes the rich will have to help out on that one.

By the way the HLS report said veterans that were disenfranchised. Meaning young guys that come home after multiple tours in Iraq to find that there are no jobs, their wife has left them and life is just basically the pits. Just like so many others they blame their problems on the current administration instead of the one that made the mess. es that is a feasible assessment.

So turn the station and quit drinking the Kool Aid. Watch some stupid reality show instead of the fantasies on FOX.

I agree, we have let way to many jobs leave the country that the people on welfare or any other gov assistance program could be doing and even if they still needed some assistance we the people wouldnt have to totally support them
