Table scraps

"Raw potato peels – Potatoes are members of the Nightshade family (Solanaceae). Potato peels, especially when they turn green from exposure to the sunlight, contain the alkaloid solanine, which is toxic. Sweet potatoes and sweet potato skins belong to a different plant family. They do not contain solanine and are safe to feed to your chickens." Source: https://blog.mcmurrayhatchery.com/2015/05/25/feeding-your-chickens-table scraps/

I feed mine most of our scraps because we make mostly all homemade meals. Mostly everything is okay, I try to give them mostly cooked things if it's potatoes and such. Mine love salad and melons on really hot days due to the water content in them. Frozen grapes are another favorite with my chickens and ducks.

Any foods other than chicken feed, dilute the nutrition chickens need for optimum health and egg laying. It is suggested non-chicken feed constitute no more than 10% of their diet. Chickens may come to prefer these non feed treats and balk at eating their feed.

Fresh, homemade meals certainly mean more scraps for the chickens.

Sometimes I think of the “chicken bowl” as a litmus test for our diet...if it’s full of veggie scraps/peels, we ate well that day. If it’s a few scraps of processed or take-out food...not so much.

We don't eat much processed food in our house because we started eating healthier about 3 years ago. We definitely have a lot more scraps, which is kind of nice because I like to give my chickens at least 20% scraps, but these scraps are mostly vegetables and fruits. Our dogs also get the scraps mixed in with their food. Our dogs will eat all vegetables and fruits that are allowed for dogs, most people who come over our amazed that our dogs will eat raw and cooked veggies without hesitation.

My dogs will clean up whatever the chickens don't want, and for all these years, has never once taken anything from the chickens while they were still eating. My dogs know that I'm the pack leader, that every chicken on the property has higher status than they do, and obediently wait their TURN for the scraps.
