I've heard that at a cpl weeks old you can tell gender by tail feathers. I have 3 black australorps and 1 has very pronounced tail feathers and the other 2 do not. Is this accurate? All my other chicks (golden comets and road island reds) have pronounced tail feathers as well. I know I'll know more for sure at 6 weeks, chicks are just under 3 weeks right now, but just curious.

Can you show pictures?

From my experience the ones with tail feathers usually turn out to be hens.
The ones with little fluffy spots turn out to be roosters. That's with RIR and black australorps I've never had golden comets.
