Taking a bath!

So I've heard that chickens like to take a bath in dirt or dust. I was wondering which is better, dirt or dust

? and also would dust rot or get smelly if it was rained on or got wet?

My whole run is sand and they dig holes until they hit the wire under the run. Some people make a wooden frame and fill with sand and mix wood ash in,they have to dust to get clean because they don't have thumbs to wash behind their ears. LoL
