Taking chicks outside

I have five 4-week old chicks and with the lousy weather in Minnesota don't know when I can take them outside. They are feathered, active, but we've just now gone up to 50 degrees. The coop is ready and I do have an exercise pen I can put them in during the day. Suggestions?

I would wait till they are fully feathered out at 8 weeks of age. We're gone up to 50-60 and even 74 on scattered days throughout this month. But then it swings back to icy precip, rain and or snow - high winds (and windchill) and days around 30. I think we are not going to have spring this year.

Welcome. I take the chicks outside when its 70 degrees or at 8 weeks, which ever happens first. However our broody, who lives in the utility room with her six tiny chicks, took then out the window to join the free ranging flock yesterday and it was about 55 degrees. I don't know how long they were out there, but they are all doing well.
 
I have 2 Sappphire gems, 1 Wyandote and 2 Americaunas. When they got too big for the brooder setup in my spare room, we put plywood on the floor, on top of tarp, then brought in a large exercise pen, used Gorilla tape with 12" high strips of cardboard and taped each section of pen to floor, which keeps in both the birds and the pine shavings. Very pleased with this setup.

You could take them out during the day and then back in at night. They will be ready in a couple of weeks, usually at 6 weeks old to go out permanently.

I still have a 5 ft pile of snow in front of my house!!April? But thanks for reply as I am still hopeful
