Hello Folks!

I've been reading posts from BYC for over a year but never officially joined until today. As my obsession with chickens grows, I can't help but want to be part of a community of other chicken lovers :)

I got my first little chickies in late summer of 2011 and enjoyed every moment of raising them. I got 7 and all were a different breed (Ameracauna, Barred Rock, Wyandotte, RIR, Buff Orp, Speckled Sussex, and Partridge Rock). I learned the hard way that mixing breeds can be dangerous however when my Rhode Island Red became a bully after more than a year, and systematically wore down and killed off my beloved Buff Orpington :(((((((( There is more to that story but I won't go into it right now.

Anyway I just got 2 new chicks at Easter (A buff Cochin and an Australorp). They seem to be meshing into the flock well which makes me very happy.

We live on a small farm in central North Carolina... because of hawks, foxes, dogs, cats, and coyotes they are kept in a large enclosure almost always.

Guess that's it! I look forward to getting to know some of you over the coming years!

Glad everyone is getting along for now. Chicken bullies are common

Good luck to you and your flock. Enjoy the site

Thank you so much for the welcome!

Yes, I knew bullying was part of the normal pecking order in a flock, but I truly never imagined that chickens with plenty of space, food, water, and shelter would ever kill another off just for the fun of it! Especially when raised together by a loving mother like me! And I didn't see it coming... I knew that "Rhody" pestered "Buffy" but there was never blood or feather loss... and never any reason I thought I needed to separate them. Nature truly can be cruel :(

Anyway, here are my new girls! Or at least I'm hoping that "Cookie" the Cochin is a girl. He/She is about 6 weeks old now and I would be shocked to find out that she was a he.

Thanks again making me feel welcome at BYC!
