taking the plunge

Hi all, I am in northern va. I already have a wonderful backyard of native plants and some of your run of the mill crops. I am now ready to get chickens. I will get bantams since I am low on space. Just to be clear, yes they may lay small eggs and be useful, I am really doing this because I love chickens. Any helpful advice would lovely!
