Anyone know any good reasons that I could use to convince my parents to let me get another hen?

I've got a Leghorn and a Australorp, and I want an Easter Egger, or another pretty brown bird that lays blue/green eggs. Variety is your friend

Is there any good arguments you can think of that makes having 3 hens better than 2, apart from the general awesomeness of having more hens

Chickens are flock animals and do not do well alone, they need friends. If something were to happen to one of the other 2 it would be smart to have a backup or 2 even. Good luck.

ditto.

it really wouldn't cost much extra to add another hen... hmm. perhaps you can offer to use some of you allowance to help pay for them? it certainly worked for me, now we have 40+ birds including quail and button quail. at least 30 eggs in the incubator, too. know how many we started out with? SIX!

the key is treating them more as YOUR animals than family pets. i always refer to them as MY chickens and if my mom objects i say "i payed for them, i buy them all of their food and i pay part of the electric bill. them chickens are MINE!"

you can also say that more eggs are good and if you have too many extra you can sell them.

OOH! and show her this post and all our responses!
