Talking To Your Chicken

So, what's strange about talking to your chickens? People don't look at me weird when I talk to the cats. Chickens, heck, they're just a bit more bird-brained.

Of course, I did get a strange look from some friends for greeting them with "Hello my little veloceraptors!"

(That's the chooks I greeted, not the friends!)

Yes, I talk to my chickens! I love to hear them 'chatter' after I say Good morning, Barney and the girls'! Barney crows and the girls chatter....This morning, I was hanging out clothes, and my grandson (2yo) said "Granny, hear Barney" and I said "Yes, baby, Granny hears Barney'...Grandson says " Barney says ' Good Morninnnnnn, bring me some crickets"!!! I hurried and finished my clothes and we took crickets to Barney and the Girls!!!!

So, not only do I talk to my chickens---my chickens talk to us!!!

I call 'chick chick' when i find a patch of bugs I think they'll like... they ignore me until I mimic RC's (Rooster Cogburn, our Silkie Roo) particular food call. "Buk Bik Buk Bik Buk Biiik!" Even the chicks know that sound.

I'm ALWAYS talking to my girls! And I don't give a rat's patootie who hears me! Of course, we're miles out in the country and the nearest neighbor is far enough away that she doesn't really ever hear me unless I'm calling the girls in for a treat from the garden. And besides, she talks to her girls all the time too!

What's that old saying? You don't have to be crazy to work/live here, but it helps!

My girls listen. Intently! And I listen to them too. We have two way conversations all the time. Just like others here, my girls each know their names too. And they usually answer to them when called. All except for April and JuneBug. Those two are the most independent little cusses you've ever seen.

All because when they were young last year I really didn't have the time to properly socialize them.

I'll never let that happen again! You never know when you'll really need to be able to pick one of your chickens up in a hurry!

Oh yes I talk to my chickens. They listen too. The Americauna hens talk to me too. Some of the roosters will come up and sit near when we sit outside. We have a pet Polish Crested rooster who knows his name and he's inside the house a LOT. Poor dude has had a time of it! He has a crooked jaw so he gets to come in the house and get fed special. Now he has a broken wing

so he really can't be out with the others. He fell asleep in my arms earlier today. I think he trusts me.
