I have two new blue andalusian pullets (Mendel and Muffin). They were about 5-6 weeks old when we got them;we've had them about a week and a half. They are still very spooky - every time we walk by the dog crate (still finishing up the coop;-) they cheep and run to the other side, anything new (food, different bedding, etc) they are sure to think an "instrument of chicken torture"! We try to hold them several times a day - my 8yr old is especially invested in this - and feed them out of out hands. (they will eat cautiously from our hands, especially if it is something they have seen before) Once we have caught them (the hard part) they settle right down - though it seems more like they are just accepting their doom, rather than comfortable.
I'm not sure whether we are doing the right thing by forcing ourselves on them (flooding) or if we should be taking the more gentle positive reinforcement approach - just let them come to us when they are comfortable and reward for doing so.
Any tips? We really want pets - not just egg layers (though we anxiously await that day too!) I know we should have waited for some day-old chicks, but we got a little anxious to start!!
Thanks to everyone!
