I need help with tape worms. ok so I’ve treated my new pullets (4-5 months old - not laying yet) with Valbazen. 2nd dose was on the 12th (Sept). I probably should have started with Zimecterin Gold since I saw tape worm segments wiggling in their droppings....but didn’t. Do I have to wait till the 22nd (10 days after the second Valbazen) to dose with Zimecterin? I have one pullet who seems lethargic all the time. Frequently closes eyes(even while walking- she will close one eye) and will separate herself to just lay down. I noticed tape segments in her droppings. I don’t want to over dose her, but would like to help her as quickly as possible. I’ve noticed tape worms in several girls droppings.... so I’ll treat them all, just need to know how soon after the last Valbazen dose is safe. Thank you....

You can give it now. Instead of Zimectrin Gold, get Equimax instead. It contains almost twice as much praziquantel so much less needs to be used.

The Equimax dose is ~0.16 ml per five pounds.
The Zimectrin Gold dose is ~0.3 ml per five pounds.

Repeat in 10-14 days.

@casportpony Would they also need to do the 10 day follow up with the Valbazen, since they started with that?

I don't really see anything listed in the "interactions" section of the vet drug manual, but you never know.
Yes, good point. Yes, 10 day follow up with Valbazen is required.

I have used Valbazen with ivermectin and Safeguard with ivermectin. I haven't used that combo with praziquantel, but I would if I ever had tapes.

Thank you! I will start them on Equimax tomorrow. I really hate to do two doses of that and then two more Valbazen after that. The two doses of Valbazen they just had won’t cover it??

The Valazen treats large roundworms, cecal worms, capillary worms, and some species of tapes. Since you have it once it needs to be given again to kill any that hatch between now and then.

The praziquantel in the Equimax will treat all species of tapes, so it too needs to be given again.

Ok. Sorry if I’m slow, but their second dose of Valbazen was just given on the 12th of Sept. is there concern that there will be more after 2 rounds of that and Equimax? I just want to get this right. Thank you....

Sorry, my bad, I'm the slow one. No more doses of Valbazen needed if you've already given two, but you will have to give two doses of the Equimax. :(
