From my research I found that there are apparently two major types of Tapeworm. I large type that can grow about a ft and a dwarf type.
There are two drugs used to treat for Tapeworm Praziquantel and Albendazole
I used the Praziquantel Tape Worm Tabs for dogs, 34mg. You also get them for cats in a smaller size, 23 mg.
Since dosage is determined by weight, I needed to weigh my chickens. I first attempted to weight them in a T shirt using the gadget I use to weigh my luggage for overseas trips. They were not very cooperative!!!!! So I took my scale outside, weighed myself and then weighed again holding a chicken. That worked well, they are a healthy 7 Lbs.
I found a website that was written by a bird vet giving the dosage as 10mg/Kg. The mg are listed on the package. I Kg equals roughly 2.212lbs.
I broke the tablets in half since they were a bit large and I wanted the chickens to get them down the first timje without tasting them (they are bitter). To this end I wrapped each half in a piece of full fat chedder cheese. Apparently they are absorbed better if taken with a little fat so this served a dual purpose. This did work quite as well except for Daisy. She managed to get the cheese off the tablet and refuse to take the other half, so I employed Dawgs method and pulled down on the wattles to get her to open her mouth........a bit tough to hold her (against her will) and manipulate the wattles and tablet, but down it went.
The Praziquantel works by dissolving the integument of the Tape worm so they are digested therefore you will not see them in their poop.
According to the vet the eggs withdrawal period is 7 days.
Below is a picture of these nasties I found on the web to help you id them.
