Tatting

So beautiful! I really really want to learn how to tat snowflakes- they've been my favorite since I was a kid!

I do lace bobbins, not that much different than tatting which I never learned to do it. One day I shall!

That mat took about a year to make, my poor mother had to teach me. First she had to relearn how to do it left handed as she is right handed, if you want to learn there are some clips showing how to on youtube (you can find practically anything on there)

That doily is lovely. I never learned how to tat but I can do anything else. I have shuttles that were given to me. I don't have a learn how book but I might try it. Even at my age I like to try new things.

I realise this is an older posting, but I just had to say that is a very pretty doily. Your "stitches" are so even. Just beatuiful.

My grandma taught me to tat when I was 9 or 10 years old. She tried to teach all the granddaughters (all 9 of us) how to knit.
We all made afgans for our barbie dolls, only mine ended up as a scarf for barbie because I just couldn't get the knitting down. It was all knots. After about a month of trying, grandma decided to teach me how to tat instead. And that skill took. I have been tatting off and on ever since. It is mostly a winter task for me, never enough time in the summer.

I recently picked up a book on tatting easter eggs! It's actually just two little doilies that you put on each end of the boiled egg and then stitch together, but they sure took cute! I am going to blow some eggs, dye them, seal them with poly, and then put the tatting on them.

I have found how-to books at the local library on tatting. It's a good place to start your search if you have the shuttles and want to learn.

I got some instructions off the Internet and I've tried without much success although just before I went on a trip I thought I was getting the hang of it but have done nothing since. Will try again soon. I hate to give up on anything once I start. Would like hands on training but I don't know anyone close to me that can tat.

The basic tatting "knot" is a larkshead.
Those of you who macramed back in the day were tying square knots and larkshead knots on almost every macrame piece you made. The larkshead in tatting is made with the shuttle around the ball thread.

I haven't done any tatting in recent years but always found it enjoyable. I've found several pattern books and instruction guides on the internet.

Thanks, NanaKat.

I never knew any of the lingo, I just kinda learned on my own.
I'm not very good, but it is something I really enjoy. Once I get into the rhythem of it I find it so relaxing.
