Teach dog to stay away from chickens

I used my boxer's gluttonous appetite against him when I bought 5 new chicks. Each time I went out to feed them I took surprise food for him. Only when his excitement and curiosity died down and he would start looking elsewhere did he get a special treat. Within the week I was letting them all out in the yard together. To date I haven't had any issue. He's 2yrs old now. Good luck with your pup!
Good system!

I'm having to keep my chickens confined to their run bc my GC's Aussie puppy (nearly 6 mo old) wants to "play" with the chickens too. Progress is happening but he's not bullet-proof yet. He wants to play with the cat too and is finally, FINALLY learning some respect there, but unfortunately chickens don't have claws like the cat does. Or scary hisses, lol. We'll get there.

It gets better! My dog has a high prey drive and when we first got him he was 2 years old and his old owners did not have chickens. This meant he chased and grab the chickens. Took about a year till he was fully trustworthy off leash with the chickens. I wouldn't leave him unsupervised with them, but I can confidently turn my back away from him and not worry. Oh, and roosters who fight back help keep him in check. Best of luck!

I'm spoiled by my other dogs! For the last 14 years I've had dogs that, not only could I turn my back, but I can leave the property, go do my shopping, be gone for hours, and know I'm not going to come home to a chicken tragedy. Gah, puppies! Lol.

See that's the best. I will say, when we leave my dog is left loose in the backyard but there is still a fence separating him and the chickens. He really enjoys being on the deck and watching them free range. I found that helped us a lot with using look don't touch since even when he was trustworthy, I knew he couldn't get to them even if they were out.

I have 2 small size dogs. Teaboy is really sweet and some of my chickens peck at his tail, and the baby Japanese bantam picks a fight with him by standing in front of teaboy and raise her head and feather. He walked away.
My other dog is a different story, he growls at them or make 1 very loud bark and they run off. That was a big improvement from him as he used to chase my chickens.
They are mingle in the garden without me is ok, but when I am not at home is too much of a risk that thing will go wrong. Even with sweet teaboy, chickens pick on him enough he will get them.

I tend not to trust anything that requires batteries or power to control a dog especially an underground fence. They're worthless. :p My dogs are protective and have never hurt my chickens but I trained them 2 years.Yes they're in the same fence.I never ever leave my chickens out when I'm gone
