Teaching a chick to eat?

It's great to hear that your chick is standing up again! Here are some tips to help encourage it to eat:

  1. Provide Fresh Food: Offer chick starter feed, which is specially formulated for young chicks. Make sure it's finely crumbled so it's easy for the chick to eat.
  2. Show It the Food: Gently place the chick near the food and use your finger to peck at the feed. This mimics how mother hens encourage their chicks to eat.
  3. Use a Shallow Dish: Place the food in a shallow dish or tray. This makes it easier for the chick to access without the risk of getting stuck or overwhelmed.
  4. Add Water: Ensure there’s fresh water available at all times. You can use a shallow dish or a chick waterer. If you're concerned about the chick drinking, you can dip its beak gently into the water to encourage it.
  5. Try Different Foods: If the chick isn't interested in the starter feed, you can try offering small pieces of hard-boiled egg or finely chopped greens. These can sometimes entice chicks to start eating.
  6. Monitor the Bantam: Since the bantam has taken the chick under her wing, observe her behavior. If she’s eating, the chick may mimic her. You can also try placing the chick closer to her while she eats.
  7. Keep It Warm: Ensure the chick is in a warm environment (around 90-95°F). Chicks need warmth to thrive and eat properly.
  8. Be Patient: Sometimes it takes a little time for chicks to start eating on their own, especially if they’ve been weak. Keep offering food and water, and give it some time.
If the chick continues to show signs of weakness or doesn't start eating soon, you may want to consult a veterinarian for further advice. Good luck, and I hope your chick continues to improve!
