Teaching an Amazon parrot to NOT say something

LOL silly bird! I wish my bird told puppies to shut up.

My uncle has a macaw. Whenever geese would fly over head, my uncle would tell the noisy birds to shut up. Now the macaw does too.

I would strongly suggest that you put the bird in the area where the family tends to hang out during the eve. I would also give the bird her own dish of dinner. What we do is thaw frozen veggies and then just warm them a little by putting them in warm water for a few minutes. Then we also give a little bit of whatever "bird safe" foods we are eating. I think if you do this and let the bird socialize with the rest of the "flock" you may see the problems improve or go away. Our birds are always out and in the same room with us when we are home and in the house. They will get very noisey when we leave the room, even just for a minute or so.

She's in our dining room/kitchen which is pretty much also our living room where we relax in the evening. So she sees us every night and we talk to her. We used to let her out, but she hates, with a passion, small fury animals and would try to kill our chihuahua. And if she can't bite the chihuahua she ends up biting the closest person within reach. She's also terrified of burly men, and my dad falls under that category. lol. So she gets angry around him.

I've tried giving her food - grapes, bananas, chicken bones, etc - but it turns out she's afraid of any new food.

She refuses to go near it until she finally works up enough courage to grab it and throw it out of her cage. lol She does love the crust on grilled cheese sandwiches, but that was an ordeal to get her to like.

Oh, I'm reading through all the things people's parrots say and laughing! I've always liked parrots, ever since I was in Honduras and all these green parrots kept saying "¡Hola! ¡Hola!" to me. Maybe I should stop lobbying for a python and start pestering my parents for a parrot instead

We got her a new toy and she is completely absorbed and focused on destoying it. I just told her "hi Goober!" which normally results in a lively "I LOOOVE you!" But she didn't even respond. Guess I found something to make her quiet now!

Yes Horsefeathers Those little guys say the funniest things.
My Quaker that recently died ( that's another post) Would poop and then say "I pooped" and then If I said who pooped, Buddy would say "Buddy Pooped". This is just one of the funny things he would say.

She's either merely expressing herself vocally, as most birds and humans do, whether we care to hear them or not.. or she's requesting/demanding something that's somehow being rewarded, hence she continues to do this each day or time that "ABC" happens.

You have to try to pay more attention to detail...IE: Her screaming occurs when...? And the result of it is..? If she's happy with the result..even if it is you yelling (interacting with her and giving her attention, in her mind) it will continue. Also note, she's maturing and Spring is here... Try cutting back on the daylight hours and noise she's exposed to, if she's getting more than 10 hours a day.

If it's no more than her time to be heard..than let it be. She needs some "my time." and may have just come into it with maturity. Don't fuss about it. Trust me. I have 15 exotics and they're all on a different "my time schedule" other than 6am when they form a rather out of tune chorus.

Gotta love the fids though!
