They were worshiping an Idol, not God “in their own idolatrous way”. What made God mad is that they where worshiping other gods when it was God alone who led them out of Egypt.
They were worshipping idols correct. God does not want to be worshipped with graven images.

Just like people are worshipping idols when celebrating easter with easter egg hunts and bunnies.

Yes, always question everything.

"O Lord, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit." Jeremiah 16:19

When will we know if we have inherited lies or not. We can’t even take a preacher's word for it. Even the Bible says preachers will not be watering the flocks. So yes, question everything. But okay gotta get back to my day.
