Hello, Backyard Chicken members!
I am new to this wonderful website, but plan on becoming a frequent visitor. I am a teenager, and live in Virginia. My uncle bought 8 acres of land, and insisted on raising several farm animals, saying as he wanted his children to grow on a farm. I, for one, love animals and would buy as many as possible. My uncle keeps me in lock with reminding me of the chores that come with them.
We started with twelve chickens and two cows. Our chickens were of all sorts of breeds.. But the most popular we have were the Plymouth, or Barred Rocks. Our cows were a pregnant mother and baby bull duo. But now, we have 9 chickens, including the rooster (a Barred Rock). We are also raising two turkey chicks. My uncle bought four guinea hens, but unfortunately the only female we had was killed by an animal. We are raising countless baby chicks. Our third batch (as I like to call it) are hatching in the incubator right now. Our first was a fail, and second came out quite well, with two dying. My uncle had also bought a set of six Silver Laced chicks, now about three months (fitting well with the turkey chicks), and also bought five Marans, but unfortunately only one came out and appears to be a rooster.
Our second batch was off of our own hens and rooster, Roo-Roo.. Although they all look like him
but the rooster Maran acts like a mommy hen to them. This is our third batch, and we have a mix. We have Pheonix, Java, Japanese, and Splash Cuckoo Marans. Three of the 32 have hatched so far.
Now, this is a website about chickens, but we have cows and sheep too. Our extremely sweet mama cow, Penny, is a Gernsey/Jersey, and mother of two. Her first is a hilarious bull named Cheeseburger, more Jersey. Penny delivered a week ago with a Gernsey/Dexter girl named Chocolate. We have four sheep. Three males, one female.
Our adult chickens (alive or passed on) are Chicka-B (my sweetie), Chicken Little (my baby cousins named her), Dapple, Chestnut & Auburn -the twins-, Stripes & Ply -the twins-, Golden, Chirp (our rare chicken), Snow, Roo-Roo, and Chite. Auburn, Chite, and Snow have passed on.
This is basically a summary of my farming life so far. And honestly, I am so happy that my uncle had the crazy idea of moving from the city to a farm.. Before I thought it was nuts.. But now it's the best thing a teenager who has a heart for animals could ever ask for.
