Hello!!
My name is Meghan and I am 13 years old. I am very interested in getting chicks for my birthday (3 weeks from now). My family is on board for the most part (me being responsible is not a question as I am very responsible and mature for my age) but we are pretty clueless about how to care for chickens!! I have done a lot research and think I could get my chicks and be able to handle them. I would just like to clarify that all of my plans make sense as this will be my first time doing this.
I want to start off with 4 chicks. I have not decided which breed but would like to start with a pretty common one for my first time. My dad and I are going to build a 6x6 coop with an 8x7 run. This might seem a little big for 4 chickens but I want to have room for growth and the possibility of more chickens in later years. Does this seem ok? The physical part of building it is not our biggest concern but I have some questions on feeders, waterers, timelines, etc.
We live in an area where it does often go below -20 degrees Celsius. How should we “winter proof” our coop? How do we make sure our water doesn’t freeze?
Once out of the brooder and into the coop, for our feeder, I was thinking of a food grade bucket with horizontal nipples. How does that seem? And for our waterer, I saw a DIY on here made out of a garbage bin and a laundry basket. The gist of it is you cut out the bottom of the garbage bin and the top of the laundry basket and place them on top of each other. If you don’t understand I’ll find the link. Would that work for our chickens?
When you transition them over to new feed the schedule should go, starter feed from birth to 6 - 8 weeks, and then grower feed until they start to lay, and then layer feed, right?
I think I know everything I need to know about the brooder, I just wanted to clarify my ideas! Thanks!!!
