Tell How Predators Got Your Chickens. Save Somebody Else From The Bad Experience

Hey, do you sell tanned pelts? I would love a nice Beaver pelt - but the ones on line seem very pricey.

We have also discovered that the neighbours rat terrier has been getting out as we have seen it twice on our land in the last two days!

I've got a run that is a dog kennel covered with steel wired top. I left the pop door open thinking raccoon proof. A weasel squeezed through the run, through the pop door, and took the head off a brooding hen laying in a corner of the coop floor. RIP Devin.

Live and learn. Pop doors stay shut at night.

Lost 4 of our 7, 8 week old birds including my Jersey Giant Roo. My wife tossed some dinner scraps into the enclosed run and walked away. Our 4 year old Beagle ripped a hole in the run and killed 4 birds and chased the other 3 away and ate the scraps. Now new rule, no scraps when dog is outside and new invisible dog fence around coop and run along with heavier duty chicken wire and a 3 wire electric horse fence for other pests or predators. We also added the red dot predator lights for night time and a few solar motion lights around the yard to pop on and scare any other predators.

For those with chain link, we have a chain link play pen with SunTuff clear roofing. It gets the afternoon sun, so I had the bright idea of getting those plastic strips you see at some commercial places in their chain link.
I called the local fencing place and asked if I could buy some leftovers from jobs, mixed colors were fine, was just using it in the chicken pen. They gave me what I needed! I took them a stack of fresh eggs :)

It comes in different sizes so you need to check the width of the spaces, and of course how tall.

I can still see in fine, they can see out fine, and it keeps the rain down and cooler in the hot summer evenings.

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories, I think most of us think (about anything in life really) it hasn't happened to me so it won't.

From reading the comments i'm surprised at the number of people who has had their own dog kill their chickens. Probably some of them that don't know what happened to their chickens fit into this group as well. Don't temp your dog. He is still a dog.

here's a horror story, last night I went to lock up and checked my broody hen, fine, check the other boxes to see if anyone else wants to go broody-and make sure no new chicks are sleeping in the nest boxes and saw something dark in a lower box so it was a six foot black rat snake gulping down eggs. I don't know anything other than mothballs to keep them away, and since i leave the coop completely open all day....I'm trying to think of a deterrent there...I have been leaving eggs in the boxes to encourage broodies and I think if i hadn't it would have gone for the eggs under my one broody.

i worry about a snake or some other predator getting in the coop during the day when the pop door is open. i've started checking at night right before i lock up. can't stand to think about my girls locked up w/a predator.
