I am wanting to get some call ducks this Spring. I need information about them. I want to know the good and bad. What they need in a shelter and pen? How do they handle cold winters? Are there different color of them?
Thanks

I love my calls. The hens are VERY vocal so if you're in town they might not be the best choice for you. They can fly really well. I keep mine penned because of this. They take the cold well and would rather set out in a raging blizzard than go in their shelter. There are lots of different colors of them. Like any duck they can make a muddy mess very quickly.

Most important they are ADDICTING!!! They are just too cute! Make sure there is nothing for them to stumble on with their short little legs. Mine were free range and I had a couple that hurt their legs trying to get over medium sized sticks or climbing the little hill around our big pond.

We have a treo on our above ground koi pond. They are alot of fun but very loud. We also keep our pond under wire because of their flying and we have hawks owls, and eagles. Need to get info on hatching eggs. We did not have any in the incubator hatch or the ones under one hen... Any help

Did you candle the eggs, and were they fertile? What are you feeding them? Put them on layer pellets about 3-4 weeks before they start laying. Supplement with some alfalfa pellets, and some oyster shells or calcium chips.

I love my calls but they do fly and are easy meals for anything. Because of that, I have to keep my penned all the time. They have a lot of personality and can be really tame but they (well the females) are VERY LOUD. Make sure you don't have close neighbors.
