We're potentially adopting a female border collie from the animal control in our area. She's very mild/sweet, good with the kids, and I really like her.

We have a fairly big yard and my husband runs off and on.

Can you tell me about your border collies/border mixes and the pros and cons of owning them... and how they react to chickens?

TIA!

This is her:

how sweet looking! my husbands parents own a border collie. they have lots of energy (beware) their dog is going on 13 and still as chipper as they first got her. great breed.
we own a shetland sheepdog (herding) they are just as sweet.
both are really gentle with small children too! good luck!

oh chickens, as i read my reply... my dog sammie (sheltie) is pretty tame with the chickens, doesnt bother with them. i dont know if a puppy would be interested? (if you know what i mean) they will bark at introuders, and most likely protect your flock. i would i would not leave the dog unattended with your flock tho. just incase.

I'm not sure, but I think if they are raised with chickens they do fine. However, my neighbors border collies are very aggressive when they trek the quarter mile to our house and they did worry our duroc hog to death while we were gone. I think that they are very smart dogs and need to be occupied or they find themselves in trouble. We had two when I was younger and I enjoyed them.
