I want to share some drake love!

I’ve been watching my runner drake, Handsome Rob, really come into his own. He’s gone from a little greedy and pushy at treat time, utterly hopeless at mating (they’re not boats, Rob), and kind of easily spooked, to a very good flock guardian.

now he waits for an invitation in the pond, and takes no for an answer.

Earlier this morning they were ranging, then he brought them all back to the pen and stood watch while they ate from the feeders, then took them back out to range.

Then this afternoon, I went to corner the Blue Swedish girls to take a look at them and suddenly I heard this patpatpat from behind me and all of a sudden Handsome Rob was standing between me and the two ducks and hollerin at me. I checked them over and stood up and he led them back to the rest of the flock.

I want to hear about your drakes! I never thought I’d keep any but it’s been so fascinating watching how he takes care of the hens.

I don't have any ducks, yet, though I did seriously consider getting Runners this year. My friend has three Pekin ducks, one hen and two drakes. I wouldn't think that's a good mix, but they just kind of happily roam the property in their little group. When we tried to catch them, both drakes tried to lure us away from the hen. It didn't work: we caught all three. :)

Our #1 stud duck is Mr Buff (he's a handsome buff orpington) who takes the whole thing of looking after and mating his ladies Very Seriously. He's been with us a year and since then he has fathered a number of offspring (bufflings), taught everyone to watch for flying predators to the point they can all do the statue thing for a very long time and has shown us he likes to get his sexy time out the way by midday - every lady gets their moment, every day, before 12. If he could have a clipboard and tick them all off of a list as he went, he would. He's very efficient as well as v handsome ! Wouldnt say he's the most chivalrous of ducks though - he's definitely shoved a lady or two out the way to get to the duck house and away from us. But nobodys perfect !

My drake is a major ahole to me he chases me all through the barn and bites me all he can. I have blood blisters on my ankles, have learned not to wear flip flops as you can lose a toe. Tried everything and it just makes him meaner. He hates only me and will let DH and strangers come in without incident. He would have a date with freezer camp but he is very gentle with the ladies. So I grab the snow shovel and feed and water the jerk twice a day.

I have 3 drakes #1 is my Muscovy drake Opie he’s 9 yrs old hatched here, he was raised inside for his first 8 weeks because his mama wanted to kill him. He loves his 4 females even going inside the coop and laying with them as they lay their eggs. But he is not a protector my 2 Runner drakes can chase Opies girls down right in front of him and he just stands there. :hmm Number 2 is my Blk Runner drake Snoop he is 4 yrs old and he takes his responsibility very serious he always watches over his girls and isn’t too rough in his mating. Now # 3 is Peanut who is the son of Snoop he just turned a year old and pretty aggressive with his mating, him an Snoop both get the blast from the hose if they are getting to rough with their girls . All 3 boys do fine together which I am very thankful for.

We currently have one young pair of Rouens. The boy, Jeremiah Puddleduck ❤️, is very sweet with people, his girlfriend Polly, the two mystery sex goslings (1 African, 1 Embden), and the 11 young pullets (various breeds). He occasionally loses his mind in the pool and swims around at 100 mphs 🙄, but generally is very sweet.
