So is the splash a color unto itself or more a descriptive term for the way the color shows up in the feathers?

Splash is the name of the homozygous expression of the blue gene. The base colour can range from white to slate; the splashes tend to have a similar range in colour, but are always noticibly darker than the base colour. Some birds are heavily splashed; overs have only a few splashes. It is generally thought that continual breeding of splash to splash produces lighter and lighter birds.
