Freshman year of college we had chemistry class together. I thought he was annoying, because he asked a million questions in class. One day I got to class early, and I had to wait outside for the class before us to finish. He showed up with his arm bandaged all the way to his elbow. I'd never spoken to him before, and I asked him what happened. He told me all non chalant "I cut off my thumb yesterday". We talked about it for a few minutes, and I was baffled, because I'd never had such a casual conversation about something so traumatic. When our classroom opened up, we walked in. He held his arm up in the air and called out to our teacher "Hey Doc! About lab this afternoon...." I'd never seen anybody behave like that before. I went home and told everybody I knew about the crazy guy in chemistry class who cut off his thumb.

We became friends and started dating a few months later. We married right after graduation, and we celebrated our 10th anniversary last year.
