Tell Us About Yourself

Name: Kelly

Birthday: 1/23/78

Hometown: Sterling Heights, MI

Current Residence: Capac, MI

Relationship Status: Married

Political Views: I guess that technically I'm a democrat, but I tend to straddle the fence a bit, depending on the issue being discussed.

Religious Views: Raised Catholic, practicing Lutheran

Interests: Over the past few years, I have branched out of my interest in crochet (I think I must be getting carpal tunnel - it hurts too much to crochet longer than 10 minutes at a time!). I love quilting and raising livestock. If I had the money to quit my job in the city, I would get a bigger plot of land and do nothing but raise and sell livestock. I love my chickens, of course. I really enjoyed my first incubation experience and am looking forward to the next opportunity... I'm really trying to get into gardening, but I just don't have the patience or the knack.

Favorite Music: Country and some oldies.

Favorite TV Shows: Sorry, I'm a Days of Our Lives fan. I also like watching the reruns of Friends and Law & Order (all the versions).

Favorite Movies: I can't even begin to list them... I like all the old Disney classics (Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmations, Fox & Hound, etc). I'm a Lifetime movie junkie (lucky for me, so is my brother in law). There are plenty of movies that I love to watch, but my mind is going blank... here we go! Wedding Crashers!

Favorite Books: Any non fiction murder mystery.

About Me: I work in the office furniture industry as a project manager, which I've been doing for almost 10 years now. By the way, it's true... once you get sucked into furniture, it never lets you go, no matter how hard you try! My first husband passed away after a bone marrow transplant 4 years ago. I met my current husband on line, who also happened to be the first person I dated after Jim passed and ironically lived only 10 minutes away!

I keep my laying chickens going year round... I raise pigs during the summer. This year we also did 50 meat chicken and 6 turkeys. In fact, I just got my first Turkey egg this week!

Ooooh, Country Gal...Law and Order...

Name: Pat (you probably guessed that already)
Birthday: in 1965
Hometown: in Pennsylvania, just outside Philly
Current Residence: a little ways north of Toronto, ON (Canada)
Relationship Status: married
Political Views: I do have them, but often end up voting on the basis of general-competence-vs-incompetence rather than policy or philosophy
Religious Views: raised Catholic, now a sort of Buddhist/atheist kind of deal

Activities: Stay at home mom of 2 young boys, and all that entails. Building and fixing stuff around the house and barn. Gardening, more in the perennials-and-shrubs-and-bulbs vein than food gardening, although I grow tomatoes and beans and lettuce and such. I have hardly any time to ride anymore (classical dressage type stuff) although (sigh!) it used to be almost my religion before I got married and had kids.

Favorite Music: some of this, some of that. Russian-composer classical music, Bela Fleck, Bob Marley, and my kids' own "bawk, bawk, bawkbawkbawk" song.

Favorite TV Shows at the moment: Dancing With The Stars (yeah, I know, so sue me), and Doctor Who (I actually think the current version is better than the old one, unlikely tho it might seem).

Favorite Books: Anything by Terry Pratchett; most things by Umberto Eco; a whole long list of others, nonfiction and fiction, that I cannot summarize in any meaningful way

About Me: I think it's bizarre that I'm a mom home with kids, since I never had the slightest interest in children and was quite happy with being a biologist in academia. Then I quit my job and moved to Canada and had kids. Life is funny.

I do miss teaching and academia a lot, but this is quite equally as enjoyable, and it turns out that while I am still not crazy about kids in general, raising our own kids is just the coolest thing ever

Love Bela Fleck, and have seen him a couple of times. My dh is a big bass fan, so we came to Bela Fleck because of Victor Wooten. I've found a lot of neat music because dh's bass playing and interest in exceptional players.

FlyingMonkeyPoop, as I've told you before (and you never listen, not once, do you think I'm just saying this for my own good? someday you'll thank me), you are a real asset to BYC. You're knowlegeable, thoughtful, you don't waste words and you are considerate!

Funny, I had a blazing career as a software engineer - my company routinely sent me across the globe to work with remote colleagues and customers. It was a blast, but when I got pregnant, I wanted nothing more than to stay home with the kids. Well, turns out that a software engineer with over a decade of experience makes way more than a fresh PhD working in academic research. Sooo, I had to keep my job.

This working mother thing was not what I had envisioned at all for my life. It is working out, I have turned down all the travel opportunities since the kids were born, and I twisted my schedule around so I can leave by 3pm to pick them up from school/daycare. Thankfully my job is ok with all that, and I am enjoying my dual role even if it wasn't my first choice.

So yeah, life is funny. I'm right there with you (and a tiny bit jealous)
