We may get some buff orpingtons and new Hampshire reds and we are not quite sure how to tell them apart...! We (as in my family) are pretty new to the chicken world so we need a bit of help. Are the legs on a new Hampshire red taller or is it just me?

I dont know thats a good question....... I'll look it up because I want to get these breeds of chicks too!

New Hampshire (no red) have yellow legs. Buff Orpington has white legs.

Telling them apart by sight's really hard. I use leg bands. There are some fancy leather ones that I love online at www.featherware.etsy.com. The leather ID bracelets come in different leather colors and you can have either your chicken's name printed on the outside of each band, or your phone number.

Hope that helps!
