Temp for just hatched baby chicks?

I try to keep mine at 95F for the first week. Watch the chicks. If they are huddled together under the light, then they are cold and you need to lower the heat lamp. If they are scattering away from the light, they are too hot and you need to raise it. Usually they are comfortable at 95F for the first week, and then decrees the temperature 5 degrees each week until they are totally feathered out and don't need it anymore. I hope that helps! Good luck!

Mine are about 4 weeks old and we are keeping them in a box in the garage but the temp outside is going to hit over 100 here in WA state and our garage heats up. I'm afraid they are going to "cook". We have already taken the light off of them because its so warm, of course if it cools down enough at night we put the light back on them. So what do we do when it gets so hot? Bring them in the house? Put them in the shade outside? Help!!!

I keep them around 98. In your situation buy a heat lamp with a wafer thermostat so it can be set to a constant temperature. The light will be off during the day and on at night. If it gets more than 100 in the garage the chicks should be moved.

Do I move them outside into the shade or just move them into my house?

Your chicks are the same age as mine right now. 100 degrees is way to hot for them and they should not be in the garage if it gets that hot in there. During the day, I will build them a little temporary pen under a tree, in the shade, outside. I leave them outside all day and them bring them back inside when it either rains are gets cooler. Usually it cools down a lot at night so I put the heat lamp back on them in the garage when I bring them in. If it is still too hot for them outside you can freeze water in 2 litter bottles. You can put those right in the pen with them and they will lay next to them to keep cool. I think that if you bring them inside the AC would be way to cold for them.

Hey thanks for the info; they did okay yesterday but it only hit 93 and they weren't even panting. Today it is suppose to be a 100 so I will have the hubby put them in the back yard in the shade. Thanks again.

Sorry for not getting back to you. It sounds like taking them outside is working. Be careful of drafts as that can make a chick sick. A photo of your brooder may help.
