temp & humidity ?

We set 40 eggs on a turner in a borrowed incubator and kept the temp around 100. We used a dollar store humidistat and kept it around 50 - 60. We removed the turner yesterday night and this morning heard them peeping. We can see cracks in 3 so far. Some of them we can't see. Next time, we'll get our own incubator and a wet bulb humidistat so we'll be more accurate. We never candled either, so we likely have quite a few that won't hatch. We have white and brown eggs in there and hope we get some browns that hatch as we really like their personality. Don't need any more aggressive roos though.

Kathyinmo,

Since you haven't yet put eggs in your incubator, have you considered using a "water-weasel" / "water-wiggler" with your Thermometer?

I thought about that, BUT the digital temp/humidity gauge I have is not the kind that would work that way. I can't find my people thermometer, but if I find it I may try that also.

Katy, Glad to hear that you saw no difference. I won't worry about it (water-wiggler) being a priority then.

Current plans are: first 18 days: humidity at 35% give or take, and temp at 100. Final days: up the humidity to 55%, give or take. Does this sound ok? All advise welcomed here.

Sounds good to me.

THANKS, Katy.....

for giving some "experienced perspective" on the "water-weasel" thing.

I expect that I won't bother with it then. I'll just try to get an "accurate" thermometer/hygrometer.

I see people mentioning on this forum that they "calibrated" or checked their thermometer for accuracy....Hmm..what are they checking it against? Is that thermometer accurate?.......Makes me wonder.

Oh Well, I trust my "cheap" blood-pressure machine..Ha-Ha!

I read on one of those pages (links I sent you), that calibrating is simply turning on your incubator and getting it to maintain the temperature you want BEFORE setting eggs. It suggests doing it 2 weeks before. It is merely the adjusting of the thermostat or wafer until it maintains at the desired temp.
