temperament of LF OEGB *hens*?

I used to have 3 OEGB roos and 4 hens mixed in my flock. Each and every one of the roos were nasty little monsters. The hens were sweet though. Little Blackie went broody. She hatched 6 out of 6 eggs (2 BR and 4 banty). The little bany chicks escaped my DH's not-quite-Ft Knox-pen and disappeared. So I got 3 more BR chicks at the feed store. She raised them all, even when they towered above her.

I sold the buffs OEGB as pairs, so I don't know if they went broody or raised chicks like Blackie did.

We have a birchen OEGB pullet, 1 silver duckwing hen and 2 silver duckwing pullets. Love them all!! They are so stinkin' cute.

The birchen pullet is pretty quiet. The silver duckwings can get kind of loud when they need to lay an egg. Otherwise, they do like to talk and love to be held and told how beautiful they are. My DS walked around a poultry show with one in his hood. She loved the attention she got.

They are one of my favorite birds. You should definitely get some.

Oh yeah! I forgot about how quiet my hen was! She would coo every once in a while, but never walked about squawking and clucking like my Cornish. My Cornish is super-talkative! LOL!

I raise both bantam and large OE. These are the show type large OE but the temperament is the same as true game hens. They are good brooders and excellent mothers. They are not flighty at all.

The best way to start out a new pup to respecting poultry is to let the pup wander too close to the mother hen and her brood.

I usually have at least 2 or 3 large and a couple bantam hens free ranging all summer, they will hatch and raise at least 2 broods a season.
At the end of my season for hatching in the incubator I will let my breeding hens go broody and hatch once, these are just bonus chicks that I do not have to care for until I want too.

When I had LF games, the hens sat solid but if you messed w/their nest or chicks, be ready to fight. There was no give in them.

OEGB hens, sat solid but they weren't near as defensive to me in handling eggs or chicks. They fight to death to protect their chicks from cats/dogs, etc.
