Temperature and Humidity

Doing some searching on BYC, and elsewhere online has lead me to realize trying to figure out temp, and humidity levels for a homemade incubator is like asking how to make their favorite supper. Every one has different "twist", but THERE HAS TO BE A "BASELINE" STANDARD. Don't know if I will be off if I don't know what to shoot for.

Thanks, easier to ask the experienced, then wade thru the muck of the world wide web.

Thanks for your input, I'm looking to convert either an old mini fridge, or a cooler and give hatching a try.

99.5 degrees (F) and about 50% humidity, increase humidity to about 65% the last 3 days.

ETA: I think i may have read that if its a still air, your supposed to have the temp at like 100.5 or something like that......

Now "lockdown" refers to the last 3 days when your cut off fingers that attempt to open bator right?

at that point should the eggs come out of the carton/holders/turners and be placed on their sides?? Looks like most pics I see people either remove the eggs from turner, or didn't use them and turned by hand

It will be the same on homemade bators as manufactured ones 99.5 deg. & humidity 25-30% first 18 days then up it to 65-70%.

Yes lay them on there sides.

Some remove eggs from turner & hatch with eggs on their sides.
Some remove eggs from turner & hatch in egg cartons small end down.
Those that hand turn just stop turning on day 18.

All are personal preferences & what works best for you.


Read this somewhere...probably on BYC:

Temps...99.5 target temp
within .5 degree = great hatch
within 1 degree = good hatch
within 2 degrees = poor hatch
within 3 degrees = unlikely any will hatch

Humidity:
perfect: under 50% the first 18 days....60% the last 3 days
